Liliana of the Veil: Cosplay Progress

Description

Haven't uploaded much lately mainly because the last con I was at was in February. Since April, I've been working on my most ambitious project in a long time for Anime Revolution 2014. I don't usually upload progress shots to dA but I figured collaging a few shots of my progress so far on this costume would be deviation worthy.

This costume is of course an adaptation of SteveArgyle's alternate art of Liliana of the Veil from Magic the Gathering, found here:
Liliana Vess. Extras version by SteveArgyle

I started playing MtG last year and I guess I just hit the ground running with it. My roommate at the time showed me some of his cards and instantly, I was enamoured with the card art. Once I started playing and collecting cards of my own, my love of the game grew into something more. I see deck building as another creative outlet and I love meticulously engineering a slick, functional deck as much as I love building a functional and beautiful costume. Black is one of my favourite colours to play because theres often additional investments in playing black cards on top of mana cost. I love the challenge of making black decks where I turn those drawbacks into benefits that ultimately lead to my victory. Thats kind of my philosophy with costuming and in life; happy accidents and making the most of any situation. But I digress, you're reading this to know more about my costume.

For the past 4 or so years, I've been doing simpler costumes and really focusing on nailing details. This is the first costume I've worked on that has a tremendous amount of visual information to interpret into a costume (to quote Steve's commentary on his illustration: "dripping with detail and extras") Its been a challenge in interpreting this design and I've loved every minute of it. I'm treating my version of this piece as an adaptation; while retaining the original silhouette, there are some details that I've taken the creative liberty to elaborate on or modify at my discretion.

This collage shows various states of progression on specific elements of the costume and don't necessarily reflect where these elements stand at the time of this deviation's publishing since I'm working on this costume every minute that I have free time. From the left column, downwards:

:bulletblack: Lace glove overlays
:bulletblack: Belt
:bulletblack: Corset
:bulletblack: Cowl

:bulletblack: Garter skulls

This will probably be the last progress collage I'l contribute on dA before finishing the costume because working on this project is consuming what little free time I have. If you're interested in seeing more progress as I churn it out, I regularly post  progress pictures on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/maryjanecospl…
